Dirk was just really liking John. Maybe a little more than he should’ve been. But it was alright; Dirk was honestly happy just having him like this. He’d be satisfied if this was all that became of their relationship. He was a simple man and knew better than to ask too much of anyone else. Especially on account of his own feelings.Having John squeeze him tighter like that, though. That felt beyond good. He could feel the tension in him as he went around the curve and over a few bumps and made a mental note to go a little slower next time, so he wasn’t so startled.
Soon enough, they pulled up to the diner, parking in a spot towards the front. Instead of pulling away, he simply turned around, smiling and running a few fingers through his hair, “Sorry, your hair got a little messed up. It looks cute though. You ready?”

John sort-of wore his heart on his sleeve, see, and anyone showing kindness to him was a liable candidate for him to shine affectionate towards. It… hrm. He was trying really hard not to. You know. Be dumb again. But Dirk had been so nice to him - he cradled him while he’d cried, held him when he’d been upset. He’d even… John had even wandered into his room at who-knows-what o'clock in the morning, curling up behind him and sobbing inconsolably. Definitely not one of his best moments. But he - it’d really given John a push into the ‘oh no this man is really nice i think i like him oh no help’ direction. Being good-looking certainly helped, too.
Ahem.
The rest of the ride was pretty easy and he relaxed a little, leaning back when they finally stopped at the diner. Ah - he felt his cheeks darken again as his hair was arranged back into place, smiling meekly. “Thanks. It looks doofy normally anyway but. Heh.” He rubbed his cheeks a little. Huff. Dirk already knew one of his weaknesses was… that. Fingers in his hair. He was dumb and predictable and liked it. “I’m so ready.” This was actually… really good for him. He hadn’t actually felt that hungry in a while - and here he was, excited to eat. It may have been the company, but regardless.
Honestly, Dirk hadn’t been ready for anything close to a relationship for quite some time. But right now, he was...
John’s brows knit a little at the explanation, tilting his head curiously. He… thought he’d drive him off? "I-” …maybe...
